ATM Fraud and Security Threats

ATMs have spread like wildfire, now adding up to over 2 million around the world, offering huge advantages to both bank and customers. Right from the start, however, their security posed a tricky problem. The valuable information contained in
these devices and the fact that real cash is on hand are obviously tremendous lures for criminals. ATM hacking is now on the rise with some organized and highly sophisticated attacks. This has now become a real headache because both banks and customers are prone to heavy losses.
ATM attacks can be broken down into three types: (1) Theft of customer bank card information or card skimming, (2) Attacks on the ATM IT infrastructure and (3) Physical attacks at ATMs. Attention has traditionally focused on mugging at the teller machines. Various physical security controls have therefore been set up around the ATM, with security cameras, closure of access doors, etc. Nowadays, however, ATM crime is tending towards techniques for stealing credit card information, to be used for identity theft, and, towards hacking attacks on the bank infrastructure to take over remote control of the ATM. This course provides an insight into the various types of ATM fraud and measure that can be taken to mitigate the risk against the same.
